What to Pack for Your Hiking Elopement

For couples seeking an unconventional and intimate way to exchange vows, choosing to hike for your elopement can be a breathtaking adventure. Imagine declaring your love amidst towering trees, lush greenery, and panoramic views as the backdrop to your special day. The tranquil sounds of nature serenading your union as you traverse scenic trails together, creating memories that will last a lifetime.

Whether you opt for a mountaintop ceremony at sunrise, a waterfall backdrop at midday, or a secluded forest clearing at dusk, the possibilities for a hiking elopement are as vast as the natural landscapes that surround you. With each bend in the trail revealing new wonders, your elopement becomes not just a destination but a sensory experience that engages all aspects of your being.

You're going to have a one-of-a-kind experience, but that also means you might have a ton of questions about how you're supposed to prepare for this type of elopement. This helpful guide is meant for you!

Here are some items to bring for your hiking elopement:

Backpacks

No hiking checklist would ever be complete without a backpack. It's the easiest way to comfortably travel with everything you need to have an epic day. Even if you're not hiking particularly far, you're still going to have a list of things to bring with you, and you'll feel more comfortable carrying it all on your back. A hiking backpack will always be preferable because of all the little features and extra compartments, plus they are much more comfortable than a regular daily use bag. Look for something that has padded shoulder straps, side pockets for a water bottle and a few different compartments so you can have some of your hiking essentials in one part and your elopement essentials in the other. If you're worried about keeping certain items like your marriage license, wallets, and phones dry, pack them in a plastic bag as a precaution.

A Good Pair Of Shoes And Hiking Boots

Depending on how adventurous you are, you're either going to need a good pair of hiking shoes or even a full-on pair of boots if you're going through streams and rocky terrain. A comfortable pair of hiking boots with a decent amount of tread is a must. I would hate for you to slip, roll an ankle, or get any blisters from wearing the wrong pair of shoes. Make sure you're wearing a good pair of socks to avoid blisters or any rolling inside your boot.

Some couples like the look of hiking boots with their wedding outfits in photos since it gives people a little sneak peek into the adventure they shared. Understandably, that look isn't for everyone, so you can pack a separate pair of shoes to wear for photos if that’s more your style.

Comfortable Layers

Layer up for your summer and winter elopements. The temperature will gradually change throughout the day, and you don't want to get stuck feeling too hot or cold by wearing a single layer for your hike.

Food

A hiking elopement can be a day-long affair, so it's best to bring some fuel to keep you going. Remember to pack some snacks or a picnic lunch (we even have a beautiful picnic blanket for you to utilize and are happy to set everything up for you). You don't want a grumbling stomach while you exchange your vows, and you'll want to replenish your energy as you're hiking.

Thermos

A thermos is a handy thing to have, especially during the cooler months. Whether you fill it with hot coffee, cocoa, or a hearty soup. It'll keep things warm throughout your hike.

Water

Water is essential. You need to stay hydrated while you're hiking, especially in the warmer months. Pack a water bladder for easy access throughout your journey to make sure you're getting enough water.

Camp Bathroom

One thing most guides fail to mention is that there likely won't be any restrooms along your hike. To prevent leaving any waste behind, I always suggest packing some waste bags like these from REI along with some toiletries, so you're more comfortable.

Headlamps

If you're hoping to catch a sunrise, sunset, or that beloved golden hour, headlamps are a great way for you to safely navigate through the dark. Photos at twilight can be absolutely stunning, so you'll want to come prepared with a good light source for the hike back to the car.

Sunscreen

It's always essential to protect your skin from the sun. After spending hours hiking through nature to find the perfect locations, the last thing you want is to have a sunburn in every picture.

Trekking Poles

Trekking poles can help you to feel more stable as you hike up and down hills or over rough terrain. They also take some of the pressure off your knees, which is an issue even the most experienced hikers can face.

Vows and Flowers

You can't forget your vows. Trying to recite them from memory can be super tricky on the day of, so it's best to bring a written copy that you can refer to. In your photos, the moment will look more sincere, and people who weren't able to attend will be able to tell exactly what part of your day they're looking at. Consider bringing a bouquet for a stunning pop of color against the nature scenery. We are happy to help you secure it to your hiking pack, so you don’t have to hand carry it during your hike!

Marriage License

Don't forget to pack this so you can sign it in the location you've chosen for your ceremony. FYI we are always willing to be your witness’s when self-uniting or if you want to add some fun to it, ask some fellow hikers while on the trail!
